We enjoyed chatting with Andrew Leigh, the author of “Innovation + Equality: How to Create a Future That Is More Star Trek Than Terminator.” Let me tell you, it was a conversation packed with insights that got me thinking about the future of work, the impact of technology, and the importance of maintaining our humanity in a rapidly changing world.
Andrew Leigh is no stranger to tackling significant issues. As a politician and an economist, he’s deeply invested in shaping policies that promote innovation and equality. And his book dives deep into these topics, offering a roadmap for creating a future where everyone can thrive.
One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the idea that the gig economy isn’t just about side hustles and flexible work arrangements—it’s about creating new opportunities for people to earn a living. Andrew emphasized that while we need to ensure worker safety and fair wages, we shouldn’t overlook the potential for the gig economy to provide additional sources of income that didn’t exist before.
We also delved into the role of entrepreneurship in driving positive change. Andrew shared inspiring stories of entrepreneurs using their businesses to make a difference, like his friend, who aims to shake up the banking industry in Australia. It’s clear that entrepreneurship isn’t just about making money—it’s about pursuing a mission that can change lives.
But, of course, no conversation about the future would be complete without addressing the elephant in the room: technology. Andrew and I discussed the fear that automation and artificial intelligence will lead to mass unemployment. However, Andrew offered a more optimistic perspective, pointing out that throughout history, new technologies have always created as many jobs as they’ve displaced. The key, he argued, is to ensure that we have the education and training programs in place to help people transition to future jobs.
One of the most pressing issues we discussed was the addictive nature of social media and its impact on mental health. Andrew highlighted the need for individual and policy-level interventions to address this problem. From limiting screen time to getting outside and connecting with nature, there are steps we can take to reclaim our time and prioritize our well-being.
And speaking of getting outside, Andrew shared his personal ritual of starting the day with a run in the bush reserve outside his house. It’s a simple yet powerful reminder of the importance of physical activity and connecting with the natural world.
As we wrapped up our conversation, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by Andrew’s vision of the future—one where innovation and equality go hand in hand and where technology enhances our lives rather than replacing them. It’s a future that’s more Star Trek than Terminator, and it’s one that I’m excited to be a part of.
