David Birch – Author of “Money in the Metaverse: Digital Assets, Online Identities, Spatial Computing, and Why Virtual Worlds Mean Real Business”

The Future of Business: Digital Assets, The Metaverse, and a Whole New World of Opportunity – A Conversation with David Birch

Mike interviews David Birch.

In this episode of Million Dollar Stories, We had the pleasure of sitting down with David Birch, author of Money in the Metaverse: Digital Assets, Online Identities, Spatial Computing, and Why Virtual Worlds Mean Real Business. If you’re not paying attention to where the world is heading right now, Birch’s work is a wake-up call. Digital assets, virtual worlds, and online identities aren’t just fantastic concepts – they’re the future of business, whether we like it or not. And guess what? The future’s already here.

SUMMARY

When you think of the metaverse, most people probably picture some sci-fi scenario with people putting on headsets, zoning out, and playing in a virtual world. And you wouldn’t be totally wrong – but Birch says it’s much more than that. The next generation of consumers is already hanging out there. Where do you think the kids who will be buying insurance, investing in companies, and running businesses are spending their time? TikTok? YouTube? Sure, a little, but most of their time is spent on platforms like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox.

What does this mean for entrepreneurs? It means that you’re already behind if you’re not thinking about the metaverse and digital assets. You’ve gotta start seeing these spaces as both gaming and business environments. The businesses of tomorrow will live in the metaverse, and the consumers will live there, too.

One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation was Birch’s insight into how ownership is evolving. Right now, the law breaks property into two categories: physical things like bicycles and intangible things like companies. But, thanks to the rapid rise of digital assets, we’re seeing a third kind of property emerge. These things exist purely in the digital realm, and Birch believes the world is about to catch up to this idea.

In the UK, they’re even making moves to legally recognize digital assets as their own class of property. That’s big news because it means more clarity, protection, and business opportunities in the virtual world. Think about it: we already see things like NFTs and virtual real estate in places like Decentraland. But we’re only scratching the surface of what digital assets will mean for business in the future.

Imagine buying a fraction of the Mona Lisa or a chunk of a massive office building, all digitally and with the speed of a click. The efficiency and liquidity digital assets bring to the market will drive huge changes in how we trade and build wealth.

If you think Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies are just a fad, Birch challenges that thinking. While he’s not convinced Bitcoin will be the future currency, he acknowledges that the innovation around blockchain technology and cryptocurrency is where the magic lies. It’s about what this technology can do for business, not necessarily the specific coin.

Blockchain allows for trade and transactions in ways we’ve never seen before – no middlemen, settlement delays, just straight-up commerce. For entrepreneurs, that means opportunity. And we’re not just talking about making your business more efficient. We’re talking about creating entirely new business models that haven’t been imagined yet. That’s what excites me.

Birch says the seeds of the next economic revolution are being planted right now, sprouting in the crypto world. Sure, maybe Bitcoin won’t be the end game. But the systems and frameworks being built around it? That’s where the future lives.

Now, if you’re like me, you might be worried about what happens when the government gets involved in all this. I brought up one of my biggest fears with Birch: When governments create their own digital currencies, are we just giving them more control over us?

What happens when a government can flip a switch and shut down your access to money because they don’t like what you said online? Sounds like something straight out of 1984, right? Birch doesn’t sugarcoat the risk but emphasizes that this is more about design choices than technology. The key, according to him, is balance. We don’t want total anonymity in our financial systems – that could lead to chaos. But we also don’t want to be spied on every time we make a purchase. The answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Mike Fallat and David Birch talk about the book Money in the Metaverse: Digital Assets, Online Identities, Spatial Computing, and Why Virtual Worlds Mean Real Business.

Still, it’s a sobering thought: the more digital our world becomes, the more control others might have over our assets if we’re not careful.

So, what’s the big takeaway from my conversation with David Birch? We’re moving into a digital world whether we like it or not. And this isn’t a world that will exist 50 years from now – it’s here today. Digital assets, the metaverse, and online identities are already reshaping how we do business, trade, and live. And as entrepreneurs, we need to be ready.

If you’re still thinking about business the old way—physical assets, physical property, in-person deals—you will be left behind. The future belongs to those who understand the power of digital assets and virtual spaces, which are already becoming the foundation of tomorrow’s economy.
